On July 30, 2011, the Byron Magpies under 11 Australian Football League team lined up on a beautiful Sunday winter morning at their home ground in Bangalow to face a team from Ballina. The result was a big win for the home team but the score is immaterial.
The boys on the ground that day experienced the best of what this uniquely Australian sport has to offer. Under clear blue skies they fought for the ball on behalf of their mates, they fell and scrambled and struggled and laughed together and yes, even cried, and when all was said and done they shook hands, wiped the sweat from their brows and strode with heads held high to the sideline as parents, friends and coaches proudly watched on.
